Langa residents have been urged to discourage illegal dumping and keep an eye on the environment.
On Saturday morning, November 14 close to 100 people could be seen with garden tools, wheelbarrows and garbage disposal bags clearing dirt from the streets of, and a nearby park in, Zone 8.
Area 3 committee chairman Siyabulela Nojekwa, said their move was meant to cast a spotlight on illegal dumping in Langa.
“This is our area and we have the duty of making sure that it is kept clean. We want the City to enforce by-laws so that guilty dumpers are duly fined,” said Mr Nojekwa.
The clean-up covered areas of Zone 8, Sandile Extension and there is hope that it will spread to other areas as well.
Deputy chairperson of Zone 8 committee, Mcebisi Ndube, said they were pleased with the response from the community.
“Young and old people answered our call and we are happy with the progress made and we hope going forward people will think twice before dumping,” he said.
Jess Fassie thanked the newly elected councillor Zingisa Nkamanga for organising grass cutters and waste removal trucks and Max Dingana from the City of Cape Town for conducting an environmental awareness session earlier during the week.
