Siviwe School of Skills in Gugulethu received learner support material from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in South Africa last Wednesday, April 17.
The school welcomed much-needed audio systems, laptops, printers, projectors, monitors, cellphones and television sets.
Consul General You Wenze said the aim is to enhance access to state-of-the-art equipment and to improve the lives communities across the country, with a specific focus on education in rural areas.
He said having access to world-class facilities is a crucial first step in encouraging children to lead healthier and more focused lives.
“It is not an exaggeration to say that education plays a most important role to improve people’s lives, promote all-round development and social progress. Education makes the country prosperous and education makes the country strong. Just like South Africa, China, from the state leaders to the general public, attaches great importance to education. Investment in education is huge,” he said.
“Although the donated equipment today may not be sufficient, it is a proof of the heart-to-heart connection between the Chinese and South African people, a true reflection of friendship between China and South Africa. We hope that the donated equipment will be of help to improve the overall teaching and studying conditions, to provide more alternative opportunities for students to fulfil the dream of going ‘from zero to hero’,” he said.
He also encouraged the pupils to learn the language of China and visit the country.
Principal Yolanda Lupondo said the school was committed to using the new materials effectively, and that many children would benefit from them.
“This has been one of our learner support materials that we needed. Remember our children are using tools and other materials for their education. They will now be able to surf the internet and watch television for other projects. This is important because it will keep our children occupied and away from negative activities. They will also perform better at school when they have support material. Our children are special-needs pupils, and it’s important to develop their abilities.”
Head of Learner Support in the Metro Central Education District, Enver Hassen said he was happy to see donations coming to the school. He said he was also happy that Siviwe is a school of choice now. He said the school is a beacon of hope. He complimented the school staff’s commitment and the community’s buy-in to the school. He encouraged the pupils to dream big.
