There was a sense of gratitude when the City of Cape Town and provincial Department of Local Government donated art supplies to Iphupha Lam After School Programme in Harare on Thursday May 2.
The NPO received pencils, paint brushes, paper and board.
Founder and director of Iphupha lam, Asanda Tshendu, said a number of children had expressed their desire to start practising art but they did not have the resources.
She said one of the key missions of her organisation is to identify talent and provide children with a platform to chase their dreams.
“I’m happy with the donation as it would help in promoting arts and help the children’s development through the exploration of arts. This donation could give birth to a great artist.”
Mayoral committee member for urban waste management, Grant Twigg, said he applauded community workers working under the local government because they are the ones who identify such programmes and organisations.
Representative of Department of Local Government, Nolungile Sibani, said their community workers are the key in bringing to the attention of the department projects that need assistance and intervention.
Ms Sibani said their role is to ensure that they bring support and resources to projects that play a crucial role in the betterment and development of communities.
Ward councillor, Anele Guebuza, praised the organisation’s work in bringing a much needed platform for children in the township to explore arts.
He said there is very limited information about arts in our communities and this project would educate them about art.
