More than 600 homes in RR Section in Khayelitsha switched on their lights for the first time yesterday.
The electrification project will see 3 000 dwellings connected to the power grid.
Initially, the project required informal structures to be relocated to enable the electrification work to proceed.Â
Mayoral committee member for energy and climate change Phindile Maxiti said: “On behalf of the City, I also thank Eskom for all of the hard work and dedication that has gone into this electrification project. Access to electricity enables economic growth; it enhances safety; reduces the risk of fires; promotes better public health; and also creates an improved environment for learners to achieve better academic results since they no longer have to use candle light to do homework and study for exams.”
The RR Section project is part of a larger electrification project that involves a number of informal settlements along Japhta Masemola Road, which include BT, RR, PP sections, the Island and Chris Hani informal settlements.Â
The electrification of Chris Hani settlement has been completed and RR Section is the second area to be connected.
