Young Peoples pulled off a shocking 31-26 victory against St George’s but Busy Bees suffered yet another defeat.
Bees would have backed themselves to also break the duck against the visiting Hamlets at Langa sports field but it wasn’t to be.
Their first half performance left much to be desired as Hamlets looked more like the home side with every possession.
Busy Bees spent much of the first half trying to contain Hamlets who went to the game having lost just once in their four outings.
Going to the break, the halftime score was 17-3 to the visitors. The half-time talk seemed to have awoken Busy Bees as they came out guns blazing, trying to reduce the deficit.
But it wasn’t to be as the final whistle sounded and the score was 26-20 to the visitors.
However, Busy Bees coaching staff would be satisfied with their second half showing against a side challenging for promotional playoffs.
Should they be able to produce the same performance as they did in the second half of the game, they should back themselves to get results in their next 8 games.
Bees will be looking to keep their SLB status having won promotion from Super League C last season.
They currently sit at the bottom of the table with 4 points, level with Rangers. Another motivating factor for the Langa outfit would be that their remaining fixtures are mostly sides occupying the bottom half of the table.
In other SLB action log leaders, Kuils River RFC continue to show their strength as the season enters the halfway mark.
The Kuila had another impressive win at the weekend as they got to the 50-point mark for the second successive game.
They needed a victory at the weekend to ensure they maintain their top spot on the log with Franschhoek keeping on the pressure as the two sides are currently tied at 27 points.
Kuils River top the log by virtue of having a superior points difference.
It also works in Kuils River’s favour that their closest rivals for top spot have played a game more than them.
At the weekend, Kuils River had no problem against Macassar at home and ran out 50-27 winners.
The win comes on the back of a 66-17 win against Busy Bees a week ago. For a side challenging for league honours, the result against Macassar was just a formality.
Macassar have struggled to get going and find themselves at the bottom half of the table with just one victory.
Franschhoek defeated another top spot challenger, Bellville, 25-22 in a closely contested encounter to ensure Kuils River do not open a gap at the top of the table.
The only blemish to Kuils River’s record this season was in the opening week of the SLB against the same Franschhoek side where they lost 24-29 and have won all five of their matches since.
Kuila will only be in action again on Saturday June 29 and will hope the two-week break does not stop their momentum when they welcome Helderberg.
When they return from the break, Franschhoek would have played two games more than the Kuils River outfit.
Franschhoek also have a break this week and return to action next week against Busy Bees.
The game against Helderberg promises to be another test of Kuils River’s character and their eagerness to make the promotional playoffs at the end of the season.
Helderberg have so far won four of their five games and will be looking to challenge for a playoff spot.
After six matches they sit six points behind the table toppers and are the divisions top try scores with 38. Kuils River are behind them on the try scoring list, with 37.
