Maphelo Paris Mankayi, Gugulethu
I write this letter on behalf on Realistic, a non-profit organisation that runs a holistic service towards socio-economic challenged situations, substance abuse awareness and early intervention.
Annually for the 12 last years we have hosted a street soccer tournament, which has been supported by local business partners. We have been able to provide participants with prizes, certificates and medals.
This tournament catered for the youth of Gugulethu, Langa, Philippi, KTC, Athlone and Khayelitsha. This year again, despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, we were able to field 16 teams although we had registered 28 teams for the tournament.
It was a huge success and for that reason I would like to thank our sponsors who made the day possible: 50 On Gugs, Capitec Bank, Nabe Pick n Pay, Nozinga Funerals, Papa At White House, Langa Boxer, Sabu and Popza taverns, Fashion World at Gugs Mall, Skhoma Butchery and Hollyhoodbets.
These programmes assist us in the fight against crime and drug abuse. Through these initiatives we are able to deter at-risk youth in our communities from experimenting with drugs and thus end up being involved in social criminal activities to support their addictions.
