After a week that left South Africans mourning the death of well-loved rapper HHP, who apparently committed suicide, Impendulo Primary School held an awareness talk about depression on Saturday.
NPO Minds of Good Health hosted a free event for the community at the Khayelitsha school to discuss the debilitating mental illness through the wellness committee headed by Vumeka Mabuza.
Chris Thwala from Minds of Good Health conducted a session where he explored the ins and outs of depression and answered questions from those who attended the talk.
Xoliswa Ngwexana-Qalazive, whose abusive marriage landed her in mental institutions in 2012 and 2014, spoke about survival and coping mechanisms.
“After I successfully took my treatment I joined a support group through Minds of Good Health. Since then I have been able to share my story openly, it’s therapeutic for me,” said Xoliswa.
Lindeka Mdlalo also shared her story of survival from depression though she said she was still learning to deal with it.
Impendulo Primary School principal Zuziwe Mputa encouraged everybody to use the information to their advantage to live a healthy lifestyle.
