Despite their team’s defeat to their nemesis Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs fans themselves won the love of many SST residents when they handed out much-needed clothing to fire victims.
The Amakhosi faithful put in a good performance by going door to door and helping those in need, on the same day their team lost. The 16 V Cluster, made up of Kaizer Chiefs branches in Mfuleni, Delft and six in Khayelitsha, were not deterred by the day’s match results.
Spokesman Luyanda Mabaso, who led the group, said they made a call to all the local branches to collect clothes.
He said after each collection, the branches would distribute the items to those in need.
“Our people have been amazing. They know that SST is part of us. We must remember that football is a way of bringing people together. This is the results of football that we are here. We are different people from different areas, brought together by the love of football and in particular one team, Kaizer Chiefs. The (branches) fill bags with a variety of items of necessity. We are here to give them to people, our people,” he said.
The clothes, some still new, were handed to families or groups by the Kaizer Chiefs supporters themselves as they wanted to make sure the right people got it. “We know the happenings when things like this happen. Not everyone gets the clothes because of corrupt individuals. Clothes or assistance do not normally get to the people which it is intended for. That is why we go house to house to give what we collected. The excitement is now in everybody’s hearts. These people want to help,” he said.
The community members heaped praise on the Amakhosi fans.
A few said that normally help does not reach them.
Lindiwe Lokiwe was grateful for their gesture. “If everyone could do like they did, no one will ever complain here. There have been clothes coming here but they ended up in the wrong hands. I lost everything but there has been nothing coming my way. I am glad to finally get something,” she said.
She said her only daughter will now have clothes. The unemployed mother wished the fans the best of luck in future. “I am really lost for words. But I wish them all the best for the future,” she said.
Thembalethu Tanda said the supporters had brightened up everyone’s day.
He said if only everyone could do the same as the Kaizer Chiefs supporters, nobody would be
left out.
