It was a glamorous occasion when Injongo Primary School in Khayelitsha held a gala dinner to celebrate 33 years of existence last Saturday.
Former pupils who had made a name for themselves in various sectors and well-known business people were among the guests, and current pupils provided the entertainment.
The main aim of the event, however, was to initiate a fund-raising drive for the construction of a school hall next year.
Principal Sithembile Mhletywa said every principal before him had left a legacy and he wanted to do the same.
He believed having a school hall would have a profound impact on teachers and pupils and would enable the school to participate in activities they currently are not able to. We hope that local business people could assist in making this dream a reality.
“We want to ensure that every child’s needs are provided for so that we could better their learning experience. We want to ensure that the school remains a top school,” he said.
Mr Mhletywa made a call to the public the donate anything that might assist the school in building the school hall.
Former pupil and now an entrepreneur, Mfundo Mbeki, vowed to help the school build the school hall.
Mr Mbeki, who owns Rands in Khayelitsha, said he still had to ascertain what kind of contribution he could make towards the school.
He said as a former pupil he felt privileged to be able to extend a helping hand to the school and ensure that pupils were afford edopportunities that they never had before. Chairperson of the school governing body, Philiswa Faba, said having a school hall had been one of their long-term goals.
