Beneficiries of a food- garden project came out in their traditional finery to celebrate Heritage Day in Langa on September 24.
Motivational talks delivered on the day at the Langa Housing Department included one by Dr Mkabile Nkomfa, who is from Bethel International Ministries.
The Urban Rural Development Capacity Building Project oversees more than 22 food gardens and kitchens.
Vacant land belonging to the City of Cape Town, as well as clinics, schools and churches used to grow, produce to improve the overall health of the community.
Project director Nompumelelo Ngoqo said a secondary impact of the food gardens was the nutrition support it gave to HIV patients who often got their only meal of the day from the gardens.
All services rendered here are for free.
Trained volunteers continue to conduct broad outreach projects to assist communities at grassroots level to start and manage food gardens and kitchens preparing nutritious foods.
Ms Ngoqo said their services had been expanded to include HIV/Aids counselling, and she noted that clinics with food gardens had found that HIV positive patients reported more frequently and completed their full course of medication because they were assured of nutritious food in their kitchens.
