Hundreds of children hopped, skipped and ran their way to the jumping castles as they were entertained during the first of its kind Children’s Festival in Ilitha Park, Khayelitsha, on Friday March 1.
The park in the area was a hive of activity with children taking part in all kinds of entertainment as their carers looked on.
The children enjoyed themselves immensely judging by the looks on their faces. Children from more than 10 daycare centres around Khayelitsha also learned about different issues including unity among themselves.
The equally excited organiser of the event, Nontobeko Mcetywa, known as Ntobsie, said the children had a wonderful day.
“We also took time out to teach the children about living a healthy and active lifestyle. We had dedicated carers and volunteers who helped us to look after them,” said Ntobsie.
The radio DJ said her love for children motivated her to organise the day for them. She said she felt excited to see centres coming from as far as Mfuleni to be part of the special event for children.
Principal of Likhon’ithemba Educare, from Mfuleni, Nomathongo Siralarala commended the organisers for taking their children out. She said most children have never been away from their crèches or locations. She said coming from Mfuleni to Khayelitsha had been a great experience for her educare centre and she was happy to hear that the festival would now be an annual one.
