Blue Jets RFC have got their season going in the Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU) Super League C after a hard fought 33-24 victory against the visiting Blues Stars in Khayelitsha stadium at the weekend.
Blue Jets scored five tries, converting four of them to Blue Stars’ three.
Blue Jets’ was in a 17-all draw in the opening afternoon of the league away to log leaders Pniel Villagers. The Blue Jets finished last season outside the play-off spots and will be looking for improvements this season.
Although it’s still early in the season, coming home with points away to log leaders is a positive sign as those are hard to come by in the division.
On the other hand, Busy Bees also got their first win of the season at the weekend, demolishing Morning Stars 53-5 at home at Langa Stadium. Their first encounter of the season was a 10-6 loss to Van der Stel, results that are not necessarily bad when looking at the opposition.
Bees will be looking to make a quick return to the Super League B at the end of this campaign, having been relegated at the end of last season.
The going is not going to be any easy with sides like Goodwood, Pniel Villagers and Van der Stel all in the running for promotion.
Other SLC results at the weekend saw log leaders Pniel Villagers getting their third win in three matches, beating Albion 13-6; new comers in the division, Hamediehs got just the start they wanted in the league by winning their opening game 28-7 away to Eersterivier; other newcomers in the log, Van der Stel and Masiphumelele were involved in a tight game which was eventually won by Van der Stel with a 21-19 scoreline. Masiphumelele will visit Blue Jets in Khayelitsha this Saturday still in search of the first win in the new division.
Their loss against Van der Stel gave them their first point in two matches and they will be looking to mount a strong challenge for full points against the hosting Blue Jets in their next encounter.
Elsewhere, in Super League B, Langa got their campaign under way when they visited Bellville. The results did not go their way in the first game of the season as they fell 39-13. This weekend they have a bye and will be back in action when they visit Kylemore looking to get their first win of the season.
