Fanie Jason, Gugulethu
Bucks Ngonco, a piano player who never got
the recognition he deserved, died penniless, without any obituary written about
his life and time as a musician and teacher.
Bucks was one of those people who were always willing to teach younger musicians without asking for payments, right through South Africa.
I was saddened when I asked a well – known freelance journalist from Langa to write a piece about Bucks. He just flatly refused. He was one of the few Langa musicians that could write and read music.
During apartheid artists from the township did not have easy access to music colleges.
Bucks was a beautiful person with a heart of gold, was never an aggressive person and always prepared to share his knowledge , he was always surrounded by younger musicians.
Long live the spirit of Bra Bucks, from Langa.
