The Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (CPYO) and the Rotary Club of Waterfront are hosting a fund-raiser featuring seven young soloists.
The concert, the inaugural Rotary Concerto Festival with the CPYO, will be conducted by Brandon Phillips and takes place at
St John’s Church, Wynberg, on Sunday June 9, at 4pm. The soloists, all of whom are musicians in the CPYO, auditioned professionally.
They are cellist Chris Njapa who will play Max Bruch’s Kol Nidrei; flautist Amanda Lawrence, who will play the 3rd movement of the Flute Concerto by Carl Reinecke; bassoonist Liam Slabbert. who will play the 1stmovement of the Weber Bassoon Concerto; trombonist James George who will play the 1st movement of Allan Stephenson’s Youth Concerto
for Trombone; French horn player Herman de Wee, who will play the 2nd movement of the Third Horn Concerto by Mozart; cellist Nwuko Sunday Kelechi who will play the Elegie by Gabriel Faure and clarinettist David Cyster who will play the 1st movement of Artie Shaw’s Clarinet Concerto.
The CPYO will also perform two overtures to showcase its musicians. The concert is in aid of funds for the CPYO and for the Rotary Club of Waterfront to support a childhood centre in Langa and to enable deserving financially challenged learners to attend sailing trips with the Youth Sailing Academy.
