Jazz icon Sylvia Mdunyelwa’s contribution to the music industry will be celebrated with a concert at the Artscape Opera House, on Saturday October 22, from 7pm.
Regarded as a fountain of wisdom, Mdunyelwa’s career spans five decades during which she has mentored the likes of Brenda Fassie, Ringo Madlingozi and McCoy Mrubata, to name but a few.
To honour her, the Sylvia Mdunyelwa Legacy Foundation has partnered with Umhlobo Wenene FM to host the concert .
The organiser’s spokesman, Banzi Tema, said the concert would feature McCoy Mrubata, Dumza Maswana, Titi Luzipho, Deen Louw and George Weiner and his Little Giants.
“There is no better way to say thank you to the African Diva than to see her fruits performing for her,” said Tema.
On Friday, McCoy “Uncle” Mrubata will kick off these celebrations with a launch of his double albums featuring “Mama Kaap” as Ma Sylvia is fondly known.
On the second day, the crème’ de la crème of South African jazz will perform and acknowledge her contribution in their careers.
Her foundation will also be launched and its logo revealed on the same weekend.
Tickets, at R200 a night, or R300 for a weekend pass, available from Computicket.
