Phindile George,Thembokwezi school holiday pogramme
Thembokwezi Residents’ Association in partnership with Thembokwezi Community Policing Sub-forum hosted a school holiday programme from Tuesday to Friday October 2 to 5.
The purpose of the school holiday programme was to ensure that young people are kept busy during school holidays to ensure that they learn something new every day, while they do something exciting on a daily basis. On the first day the young people were taken on an open-top bus ride which started in Long Street, at the main booking offices of the Cape Town City Site Seeing bus rides. The young people were very excited as the bus took a drive through the beautiful Mother City, while the young people made use of the tour guide radio which played through their headset as they listened attentively to the history of each area and what they can do should they decide to get off.
They explored the beautiful route which cuts across the mountainous areas starting from Long Street offices, to Mount Nelson, Kirstenbosch, Constantia Nek, World of Birds, Imizamo Yethu, Marina’s Wharf, Camps Bay, President Hotel, St John’s Road, Winchester Mansions Hotel, Green Point and reached their destination, the aquarium, which was the second activity of the school holiday programme. They saw their favourite, Nemo the famous clown fish, they saw the starfish, small sharks, sting rays, seahorse, and many other fascinating deep sea creatures.
The young people appreciated the visit to the aquarium because it taught them about other species which they don’t come across on a daily basis. On the second day, working with Usiba Loluntu, which is led by Sandile Banjwa, young people attended a cyber crime workshop which dealt with how people are scammed at ATMs, internet phishing and how to detect that a person is being hacked.
The following day the youth were taken to Iziko Museum where they learned about the history of slavery, and where we come from as a country so that they can appreciate the opportunities that are available for the today.
On the last day, they climbed Lions’ Head which was a lesson on how tough and difficult life is, that you focus, take one step at a time and you will eventually achieve your goals after putting in effort and also working as a team.
Thanks to everyone who made this programme possible.
