Langa CC needs to turn the tables

Langas Luthando Williams and his side struggled to get going against Victorians, losing by 161 runs at home. Williams took one wicket during his sides bowling innings.

Langa Cricket Club’s first team are still searching for their first win of the current Western Province Cricket Association
(WPCA) Premier Division, one-day campaign.

They are rock-bottom in the 12-team log, having lost all seven matches this season.

And, that means they have to turn their fortunes around in their next three matches, if they want to go to the Christmas break with their heads held high.

That is, of course, a tough call, as their opponents, before the Christmas break, are no pushovers.

Their next match, for instance, is against fifth-placed Brackenfell. The northern suburbs side has been solid in their campaign so far, having won four and lost only three of their seven matches.

That match will be followed by a tricky one against Milnerton, who are two spots above Langa at number 10, on Saturday December 15.

The only difference between the sides is that Minerton have won two and lost five matches this season. Things will get even tougher for the Langa side after that game. The following day, Sunday December 16, they will come up against high-flying Rondebosch.

Things cannot get any tougher than for Langa and, if they survive that onslaught, chances are that they will survive the dreaded drop.

Their latest defeat came when they went down by 161 runs at home against Victorians, at the weekend.

Vics batted first and posted a defendable 265/7 in 50 overs. Middle order batsman Marco Wyngard top-scored with 109 not out. He got that off 99 balls, hitting six 4s and five 6s in the process.

Athi Daniels was the best of the Langa bowlers, taking 3/34 in seven overs. Thami Tshengiwe took one wicket in his three-over spell. In reply, the home side struggled to cope with Vics’ bowling attack and, as a result, none of their batsmen was able reach 31 runs. They ended up going down by 161 runs.

Looking at their season so far, it was always going to be tough for the Langa outfit.

That means the side need to turn things around, quickly, if they want to keep their premier division status intact, come next round.

Having said that, however, they cannot be written off yet, especially at this stage of the season. History has shown that they have the players and the attitude to get themselves out of tight corners.
