Don’t forget the kids, says coach

Anella Bota, chairman /coach of Khayelitsha-based Goal Hunters Women's Football Club is having a tough time trying to explain to little daughter Indiphile Tom, 4, and others why playing outside or group training sessions is off limits for now.

Following the cancellation of football activities and subsequent implementation of the national lockdown due to the outbreak of the coronavirus, the former referee and a team manager at Second Division side Magic FC, has taken to social media to raise his concerns about youngsters and how to keep them occupied during the lockdown.

“The outbreak of coronavirus has affected us big time. It is difficult for the youngsters to understand the severity of the situation but, as coaches, we are trying hard to convince them to stay indoors.

“The good thing though is that the older juniors seem to understand what is important,” he said.

“The situation is getting worse, so education is important.

“We try to make the players aware that even if you haven’t travelled, that doesn’t mean you can’t be affected,” he said
