Youth empowered

Mothofela Mpula, a community worker from the provincial Department of Local Government addresses the masses of Driftsands.

If you want to improve your life, then education is the tool you’ll need to do it.

That was the message 40-odd people heard at the Driftsands hall last week from Mothofela Mpula, a community worker from the provincial Department of Local Government.

The department organised the meeting on Tuesday March 12 to give young people career advice and put them in touch with organisations that can help them find work.

She said many young people found it hard find suitable career-guidance services.

But they needed the right advice to make informed decisions about their futures, otherwise they could grow frustrated and give up hope of finding work.

The youth needed to understand that education was the only tool that could change their lives for the better, she said.

“We want the youth to make use of such skills and opportunities. We want the youth to never give up on their dreams. We want to ensure that youth have access to these opportunities.“We need to empower the youth with every little bit knowledge and skills that the government has. We want the youth to make right choices,” she said. Mamphela Malowa, from the Department of Higher Education and Training, said the country had a great need for artisans and she encouraged young people to enrol at TVET colleges where they could train as such.

Ditupa Fothane, from Khetha Career Development Services, which is part of the Department of Higher Education and Training, said they helped people compile CVs and prepare for job interviews. Khetha also gives career guidance and advice on study options and how to finance studies.
