Social media has enabled people across the globe to engage with each other and given them a platform to push their opinions or promote their brands.
It is really up to you how you use it. A young woman from Khayelitsha, Vuyiswa Tsautse, has decided to keep it positive, having started her own motivational blog and YouTube channel.
Ms Tsautse, 27, said she had seen that many blogs and YouTube channels focused on glamorous lifestyles and entertainment. But very few tackled “real” issues which she aims to do by sharing her own life challenges.
Ms Tsautse firmly believes that young people should use these platforms to influence their peers and be agents of change in their communities. She said it was worrying that young people are not creating content that speaks about the issues that are facing their communities.
“This is not about money but about changing someone’s life. I want to make an impact on another person that might be facing endless life challenges. I want to use these platforms to make a difference. I want people to think and live positively. I want young people to be role models in their communities,” she said.
She said many young people have access to online content and it is precisely for this reason that she opted to grab that opportunity. Some of the issues tackled in her video blogs include why comparison can be good or bad, relationship advice and race relations.
