The pupils at Tembaletu School for Learners with Special Education Needs in Gugulethu now have a playground donated by the Hillsong Church.
At a cost of roughly R250 000, the church spent weeks converting an open space within the school premises into a beautiful friendly playground which was handed over on Monday November 11.
Hillsong Church representative, Pastor Paul White, said the new playground would enable children to let off a bit of steam and enjoy their time outside their classrooms. But most importantly, he said, they were strong believers in learning outside the classroom while promoting learning through play.
And, he added, the playground was designed to accommodate children of all ages as well as those with disabilities. Through the playground, he said they wanted to ignite the children’s passion for sport.
He added that what they had done for the school was not a favour but it was God’s work and plan. “We want to instil hope. We want to make them feel loved and appreciated.
“Every child deserves to enjoy their school lives. School is the platform where children get a chance to explore their hidden talents including sport,” he said.
Mr White said it had been almost 10 years since the church first developed a relationship with the school and vowed to continue to support them.
School principal, Ayanda Matshazo, said it was an honour for the school to receive the playground and praised the church for always listening to their numerous cries for help. He said the solid partnership they have with the church had been their pillar of strength over the years.
