Site C gets soap, sanitiser

Residents were thrilled to receive packs from Iliso Care Society.

NGO Iliso Care Society donated soap and hand sanitiser to the community of Site C to encourage residents to wash their hands regularly and curb the spread of Covid-19.

The organisation said it felt it needed to use its limited resources to help the community practise good hygiene.

Today marks day 14 of the 21-day national lockdown to curb the spread of Covid-19.

Tens of thousands of people have already died of Covid-19 across the world and many countries, including the United States of America, are struggling to contain it.

People have been urged to wash or sanitise their hands regularly and practise physical distancing from each other to prevent infection and stay home.

Iliso Care Society donated 750 packs of soap, sanitiser and instant porridge to various areas of Site C from Wednesday April 1 until Friday April 3.

Like any other township, many residents do not have extra money to buy soap and sanitiser due to high levels of poverty and unemployment, which is why Iliso Care Society decided to help. Young and old practised the recommended physical distancing while patiently waiting to receive their packs.

Organisation founder, Vivian Zilo, said the NGO’s mission is to assist the government through various awareness campaigns and providing critical services.

Resident Mzikayise Mketshane said he was glad that someone thought about handing out these essentials.

Ward councillor Ntomboxolo Kopman said she applauded the organisation for thinking about the residents who might not have the means to buy the soap and sanitiser. She urged parents, youth and children to obey the government’s instructions.
