As we head toward National Women’s Day, marked annually on August 9, Vukani spoke to radio presenter Tozama ’Sis Toz’ Ngcongolo who commands a sizeable following of Umhlobo Wenene FM listeners.
The mid-morning show, from 9am to noon, provides different features aimed at providing solutions to the challenges that the station’s listeners are grappling with.
Sis Toz took over the show in January 2020 from another radio power, Lulu Haarmans.
The born again Christian, was raised in Langa and is a social worker by profession. She obtained her BA Social Work degree from the University of the Western Cape and Honours in Social Development from the University of Cape Town.
“Tozama is not perfect as only Jesus is perfect, but always strives to do things in an orderly and professional way”, says Sis Toz.
Tozama, who has been with Umhlobo Wenene FM for 13 years, is the daughter of a radio stalwart, the late Kolekile Norman Ngcongolo who was popularly known as Nomenti on Radio Bantu / Radio Xhosa that is now called Umhlobo Wenene FM.
She was spotted by the former provincial general manager of SABC Eastern Cape, Zola Yeye while directing a memorial service and subsequently recommended her to the station management in 2008.
Sis Toz always wears a smile and believes that working with people either physically or through the medium of radio is what she was born to do.
One of her favourite quotes is: “All things are possible to those who believe.”
Besides her radio engagements weekdays, Sis Toz is an eloquent public speaker and presenter who gets invitations to speak, especially for women’s and young people’s initiatives.
