The battle to cross Ncumo Road in Harare due to constant sewage spills has left residents fuming.
For weeks now the sewage has pooled up on Ncumo Road in 35 Section of Ward 98.
When Vukani visited the area, residents had covered the drain lids in an attempt to keep the sewage from spilling.
Resident Nosibulele Zwelandile said for almost three weeks their lives had become miserable because of the awful smell.
Ms Zwelandile said they feel that their health has been compromised and it seems that the City is not bothered to help.
She said the area is prone to sewage spills and they fear for the health of their children and senior citizens.
“We want this matter to be attended to. We cannot live like this. We feel uncared for. You cannot even enjoy sitting outside of your house because of this smell. We live like pigs honestly,” she said.
Ward councillor, Anele Gabuza, said the major cause of these sewage spills is because of nearby informal settlements called Taliban.
He said three shacks in that area have been built on top of the main sewage line and they needed to be removed. He said the entire area of Harare is grappling with constant sewage spills because of this issue.
He said they have engaged with the residents of those shacks and have identified a space to relocate them so the sewage line can be fixed.
“I was hoping that before the end of this week we could move these three households but there is other logistics that need to be done before this process could commence. I’m hoping that next week we could move them so that the City can start repairing whatever that needs to be fixed. Everywhere you go in this area of Harare you are confronted with faeces in the streets,” he said.
