One of Mzansi’s celebrated soccer commentators Baba Mthethwa showed his soft side when he recently organised a motorised wheelchair for a young Makhaza woman, Nobathembu Peter.
Nobathembu had approached Mr Mthethwa with her life story.
“I contacted Mr Mthethwa through Samson Malikana whom I follow on Twitter and told him that I was paralysed at the age of 3 when a drunk driver rode over me in Mossel Bay,” she said.
Nobathembu had initially wanted the motorised wheelchair as a birthday present in January.
She was pleasantly surprised when Mr Mthethwa insisted that he would find her “new wheels” via a social corporate investment campaign known as Love PSL, which goes across the country giving deserving people a break.
“Samson told me that Baba Mthethwa would like to assist me in getting a motorised wheelchair which would make life so much easier for me,” she said. “Having a motorised wheelchair will enable me to help myself without needing any assistance, I would also be able to do chores around the house with out any difficulty. I would be able to live a life with more possibilities because I would be able to do so much more for myself. All I want is to be physically independent, something other people take for granted is something some of us wish to have,” she said.
Nobathembu and her sister Nomkhitha recently flew to Johannesburg to view the wheelchair, it is expected to arrive in Cape Town soon.
