Mfuleni resident Lelethu Scott has a new wendy house to call home after she was the recipient of a supermarket’s Mandela Day initiative.
Two wendy houses were built in Mfuleni, and one each in Philippi and Delft.
Lawrence Ndengane from Goal Supermarket said: “We are following the protocol of the late president’s call to help others. But we are ploughing back into the communities where we operate. Our business would not be what it is if these communities were not supporting us,” he said.
The wendy houses were built by emerging local contractors.
On Tuesday in Mfuleni, the afternoon was marked with activities including gifts for residents.
Ms Scott was at work and had to be represented by her mother Nokuzola Scott who said the house came at the right time for Lelethu. “She had been renting out in Bardale until she lost her job during the Covid-19 pandemic. She and her four children then had to move in with me. Now they will have a place of their own.”
Ms Scott thanked the supermarket and urged it to continue to help poor communities. Other recipients of wendy houses were Nomvuzo Mpetsheni in Delft, Nontembiso Jeyi in Mfuleni and Thandokazi Rangana in Philippi East.
