Members of a Makhaza neighbourhood watch have received praise for their hard work and new gear to help them fight crime.
The Khuseleka Neighbourhood Watch, which operates in the Harare police precinct, received certificates of appreciation from the Harare Community Police Forum, at Desmond Tutu Hall, on Wednesday last week.
The group also received equipment donated by ward councillor Lucky Mbiza.
The volunteers were praised for making a difference in their community.
Harare CPF chairperson Funeka Soldaat said the members were doing a very good job in the Island informal settlement in Makhaza.
“We wanted to acknowledge their hard work because these people are using their own time to do all of this and do not receive any form of payment.
“We want to encourage them to keep doing it, and we applaud them for ensuring that there is peace in their community.
“The area of Island is one of the notorious areas in their community, but even so that did not dampen their spirit of walking at night around their community ensuring that crime has no space in their community. We just wanted to say thank you.”
The watch’s coordinator, Ncedo Phila, expressed gratitude for the recognition and the gear.
He praised the members for their dedication but said the watch needed more men and young people to join as everyone had a role to play in supporting Makhaza.
Ward councillor Lucky Mbiza said the watch played a key role in fighting crime and was an asset to the community.
Harare police station spokeswoman Lieutenant Nosiphiwo Mntengwane praised the watch members for their efforts and urged the community to work with the police to fight crime.
