Mr Western Cape launches drive for sanitary products

A young Khayelitsha man, who was named Mr Western Cape last year, has launched an initiative to make sanitary products available for young girls who cannot afford them.

The contest, which was won by Simbulele Doro, 24, was hosted by Role Models Foundation last year in November.

Mr Doro, who holds a national diploma in travel and tourism from the College of Cape Town, said he had entered the competition with a winning mentality and wanted to use the platform to make a difference in the lives of others.

With the current pandemic facing the country, he said, he recently started an initiative called #HelpASista to collect and donate sanitary towels and other crucial products which girls might need in these trying times.

Through the initiative, he wanted to put smiles on the faces of girls and show them that young men cared about their well-being.

He said entrants were required to be passionate about community upliftment and demonstrate good leadership skills.

“If one’s dream should fall and break into a thousand pieces, never be afraid to pick one of those pieces up and begin again,” he said.

“You will never do anything in this world without courage.

It is the greatest quality in the mind next to honour. Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined.

“You are enough. Be unapologetically you.”

Mr Doro has partnered with other organisations to improve his chances of making a singificant impact and has called on the youth of Khayelitsha and in other areas to do their bit to make a positive change in their communities.

Talking about his aspirations, he told Vukani he would like to enter – and win – the Mr SA competition and use that platform to make a change in the country.
