Khayelitsha fire leaves 104 homeless

At least 104 people have been left homeless after their informal structures caught fire in Palma Road, Khayelitsha yesterday.

A total of 26 structures were gutted. 

Four fire engines, three water tanks with 28 firefighters were dispatched.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is still unknown.

At the same time, the Disaster Risk Management Centre has informed the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) as it is mandated to provide humanitarian relief.

Disaster Risk Management Centre spokesperson Charlotte Powell said, “The City of Cape Town’s Informal Settlement Department is on site and will issue starter kits for residents to rebuild once fire debris has been removed.”
