When it was started in 2017, the aim of Khaltsha TV, an online channel, was to create original township content.
Following years of research, its founder, Buzwe Terence Bonga, observed that township residents were not telling their own stories.
“I then thought of setting up online TV channel that would change the ill-informed township narrative and give our people a voice,” he said.
Buzwe is also a social media expert at one of the biggest telecommunications company in South Africa.
“I grew fond of the film in the creative side, then I went to do a short course at SAE to enhance that skill I have obtained through online courses and YouTube tutorials, “ he said.
Khaltsha TV can be streamed on YouTube and those who can’t access the channel can get the content on various social media platforms.
“The channel’s social media presence has immensely driven or created traffic for the channel. The internet is the new medium where most of the relevant and up to date content is at, and we took advantage of that,” Buzwe said.
Khaltsha TV also specialises in creating promo videos for small and big businesses and Buzwe works with content creators Zwelibanzi Tshabalala and Kwanele Mvundlela.
Zwelibanzi born and raised in Orange Farm, Johannesburg, studied at Big Fish School of Digital Film-making and has been engaged in the South African film and television industry as a camera assistant.
“I believe that the internet is the new home for all film and content producers and we hoping to take Khaltsha TV to heights,” he said.
Another graduate from the Big Fish School of Digital Filmmaking, Kwanele believes the industry is big enough for everyone in the game to have a big slice of the pie.
Initially the channel solely covered events around Khayelitsha but its audience was eager for more. So, Khaltsha TV started creating content which included current affairs, interviews with entrepreneurs and sports.
“The only achievement we can boast about is the love and support that our community is giving us. We have recently given a young and upcoming presenter from Khayelitsha an opportunity to use our platform to boost his skills for bigger platforms,” Buzwe said.
