It was a day of fun, learning and playing when Sikhula Sonke Early Childhood Development (ECD) centre held a fun day at Mandela Park on Friday June 7.
The centre had invited 33 educare centres from around Khayelitsha and 823 children took part in activities.
Various stakeholders such as Harare police officers, firefighters and others graced the event and provided children an opportunity to interact with them.
There were jumping castles, face painting, hula hoops, soccer balls, skipping ropes and other games.
Sikhula Sonke ECD library team leader, Cebisa Maseti, said the event is aimed at providing a safer environment for children to just have fun and play freely with little supervision.
Ms Maseti said the environment which many children come from does not provide them with the freedom and safety to play.
“This play is vital for children’s development. We must always ensure that we provide a safe environment for them.
‘’We want to do more of these events because we have seen their impact,” she said.
Lindelwa Masizani, from Iminathi educare centre in Town Two, said she was glad they took part in the event as she saw how the children enjoyed themselves.
She feels that such events should not only be held once a year but at least twice so that the children can also learn more ways of interacting with each other and tolerating their peers.
Phumeza Vagxabe, from Masimanyane educare centre in Mfuleni, said her children enjoyed the event.
