Life sentence meted out in taxi driver hijack and rape case

A successful conviction was reached in the Khayelitsha Regional Court in a hijacking and rape case with one of the accused getting a life sentence.

On Monday February 25 Mthetheleli Zini and Azola Kula were convicted for the hijacking of a taxi driver and his girlfriend and the girlfriend’s rape.

In June 2014 the taxi driver and his girlfriend was travelling together in RR block when they were hijacked by Zini and Kula, who was a minor at the time.

The two repeatedly raped the woman while her boyfriend was forced to watch them perform this crime.

Both Zini and Kula were arrested shortly after the incident by Warrant Officer Gordon of Mfuleni.

Sergeant Leon Thomas of Khayelitsha detectives was assigned to investigate the case and through his investigation and hard work, Zini was given a life sentence and Kula was sentenced to 15 years.
