Khayelitsha fashion student Duma Soko jetted out last night to attend the prestigious FRANKfurtstyleawards taking place in Frankfurt, Germany, on Saturday June 29.
Duma, 22, who is in his final year at the Design Academy of Fashion in Salt River, is among 60 participants chosen by a jury of fashion industry professionals for the final round of the international talent contest for fashion and design.
“Duma Soko is one of the nominees we invited to realise their original design ideas for the finale of the FRANKfurtstyleaward 2019.
“This is one of the most important international competitions for young talent in fashion and design and stands for a sustainable talent and career platform that promotes innovative ideas, creativity and outstanding creative achievement,” said the FRANKfurtstyleaward chief executive officer, Hannemie Stitz-Kramer.
Ms Stitz-Kramer said the nomination for the international talent contest is the first step into an international fashion career.
“The FRANKfurtstyleaward 2019 finale runaway show is a valuable opportunity to win awards of distinction and prizes,” she said.
Duma said he was excited to be part of this show.
“It will expose me to great minds of the industry and they too will learn from what I am offering,” said Duma before flying out.
“This is very big for me coming from a disadvantaged background.
Not only was nominated for awards but I am representing my country and continent, as only eight of us were nominated across the continent.
I am very happy for the opportunity and very humbled by the recognition.”
Duma will return next week.
