Kamva Goso, who attended Intsebenziswano Secondary School pupil in Philippi, Kamva Goso, has beaten the odds to make it onto the list of the country’s top matriculants.
In addition to being named the country’s top pupil in the country from a Quintile 2 school, he also achieved the second highest mark for physical science nationally.
The 18-year-old was among the top 30 pupils across the country who had been invited by the Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga in Pretoria last Thursday to honour them in a, to a glittering event in Pretoria last Thursday.
When the results were released to schools last Friday, family, friends, community leaders and teachers all gathered at the school premises to welcome him.
There were placards all praising Kamva for his achievements. The shy and soft–spoken pupil said he believed that determination and dedication were the key ingredients to success.
In an interview with Vukani, he said as much as he knew that he would pass, he hadn’t anticipated that he would do so well and be among the top pupils in the country.
When he was told how well he had done, he could contain his emotions and wept silently.
He added that even now it had not yet sunk in and it still felt unreal.
However, he said, his hard work paid off. He said he was excited that he had passed and that simply and his results meant that his sacrifices and efforts had worked and yielded the desired results.
He told Vukani that being a pupil at a township school with limited resources had posed a challenge, so he had sought additional assistance where possible.
But he said he opted to go out of his way and seek help from other people and did not rely on his teachers only. He said lack of studying material had been the main challenge but that did very little to dampen his work ethic. He said he also attended the classes at Kutlwanong Centre for Maths, Science and Technology in Philippi to enhance his knowledge.
He said he was the first pupil from the township schools to achieve what he has achieved and that makes him proud.
