With the rain lashing the city, and nights becoming bitterly cold, a donation of blankets and slippers was warmly welcomed by 21 senior citizens last week.
The Khayelitsha Moravian Church handed over the items to the Illitha Park seniors on Tuesday July 6.
Church Acolyte, Lulama Mfuniselo, said the role of the church included looking after their members.
He said many senior citizens depended solely on their old age social grant or disability grant which was not nearly enough to cover all the basic items they needed.
“We want to make a change in the community that we serve. We must never shy away from our duty as a church to plough back to our communities.
“We must not only accept church offerings from our members and not step in when we see that there is a great need to assist. We must respect the communities that we serve so that we could be able to work together and find a common ground of making a better change in our areas,” he said.
Beneficiary, Anderson Jiva welcomed the donation with a huge smile and applauded the church for their continued efforts to bring about change in their community.
Another beneficiary Mbulelo Mazibuko urged the church to keep doing their good deeds and praised the leaders for always thinking about those who are less fortunate.
