The City of Cape Town’s informal settlement management staff have completed the issuing of enhanced emergency fire kits to all people, who were affected by the fires that occurred over the weekend, in Khayelitsha and Philippi.
Yesterday all of the fire kits were delivered to the registered fire-affected residents in the two affected informal settlements, Kosovo in Philippi and Silver Town in Khayelitsha.
Before the kits were delivered, the sites were cleared of debris and the verification process of the affected people was undertaken.
Mayoral committee member for Informal Settlements; Water and Waste Services; and Energy, Xanthea Limberg, thanked City staff and contractors for assisting the fire victims.
“We also thank the people of Cape Town for all of the support that has been offered to those who have been affected. In the last financial year, the City spent approximately R30 million on emergency materials and has made significant improvements to the emergency fire kits that are issued to victims.” said Ms Limberg.
Residents are urged not to donate perishable items, especially bread, as there is no facility to store these items safely.
Donations can also be dropped off at the Khayelitsha fire station.
The City has made the Mayoral Relief Fund available: Nedbank, account number 1158667043, branch code 198765, reference A009.
