Mini-bus taxis and amaphela were not the fastest vehicles in Gugulethu last week as an Aston Martin F1 racing car was brought to the area for residents to see.
Gugulethu residents forgot about the GTIs, BMWs and other luxury cars because the Red Bull Aston Martin was the only one on their minds.
It was delivered right to their doorstep at Gugulethu Mall by the sponsors, Red Bull, so people could get a feel for F1 racing.
The sight of the immaculate classic car was welcomed by many excited spectators who only get to see F1 racing on television.
When Vukani visited Gugulethu on Thursday morning, May 9, stunned residents could not keep their eyes off the car and took the opportunity to snap some selfies. One resident Zipho Manundu, said he wanted to see the car on NY1, known as Steve Biko Road.
“Can’t they test it down the NY1. I would love to see it running like in the race. This is awesome.”
The sponsor’s spokesman Noel Timms said: “We are happy to have brought the car to the people of Gugs.
“The reaction we got from them was amazing. They were like ‘wow’.
That explained how people appreciate the generosity of bringing the car here.
“We are all excited to have made it happen.”
The car was only in Gugs for a day and was taken to other areas around the city.
The Gugs display was a build-up to the Red Bull Cape Town Circuit, taking place on Sunday June 2 in the city centre. Fans will get the opportunity to witness the thundering power of an F1 car at close quarters as British former Formula 1 racing driver, David Coulthard, will be driving the RB7 supported by the Aston Marti
The event takes place from noon to 5pm in Darling Street between Christiaan Barnard and Adderley streets and there will be a host of other support acts. General access is free while limited grandstand tickets are on sale from Computicket.
