The assault of a promising 15-year-old soccer player has sent shockwaves through Gugulethu where the youngster was dumped.

Over the weekend, under-16 Ajax Cape Town player Samora Gwagwa was severely beaten before being dumped near his home.

Good Samaritans found the boy who, team representatives said, was beaten so badly he was almost unrecognisable.

Shocked members said Samora had just played over the weekend and went home for the weekend.

Ajax spokesman Thabiso Mekuto said the team went to see him in hospital. He had suffered extensive bruising to his face, head and body and was still shaken by the incident.

“The good news s that Samora is recovering well. But I can confirm that he was badly assaulted. We found it difficult to recognise him.

“We also do not know what happened for him to be beaten like that,” said Mr Mekuto

Mr Mekuto said the team urged anyone with information about the assault to pass this on to police.

“He had just enjoyed his birthday during the week.

He went home to see his family and enjoy more time with the family. This
was a very disturbing incident for the team, his teammates, friends and his family. We wish him a speedy recovery and would like to send lots of love to his family,” said Mr Mekuto.

Samora’s parents did not want to speak to the media about his assault.
