Youth given chance to discover talents

Ubizo Eduo, which was recently launched in Mfuleni, seeks to empower children with skills and encourage them to pursue their passions.

The children will be taught music, basic computer skills, computer coding, cooking and baking, crafts and will also be assisted with their school work.

A total of 60 children have already signed up and classes will be conducted every Saturday between 10am and 3pm, at Lonwaba Centre for children living with disabilities.

They take children between the age of 6 and 18.

Ubizo director, Phumza Shayi said children should be exposed to a variety of skills and that, through the organisation, they wanted to encourage children to follow their dreams and introduce them into different careers.

In doing so, she said the children stood a better chance in life of becoming better people and be agents of change in their communities.

Ms Shayi believes that the true revelation of a society is seen in how it treats children.

“Children are a special gift. We must nurture them so that they become great leaders in our society.

“Each and everyone has the duty to play a role in changing our communities. Every child deserve an opportunity to discover their talents.

“I hope two or three of these children could say in years to come that Ubizo change my life. Let us all do something positive for our communities. Let’s not do something because we want money. Money is not everything,” she said.

Votisi Mantshontsho, whose two children are part of this organisation, said this would keep the children occupied while learning vital skills along the way.

He said such initiatives assist parents in guiding and steering their children in the right directions.

But he also said it enables parents to have free time.

Akhona Nogaya said she was excited to be part of this project and she feels that she is going to learn a lot.
