Jazz in the Native Yards and Concerts SA will be celebrating Africa Day with a performance by a group of young musicians known as Chapterz, on Sunday May 26, at Kwa Sec, NY 138 no. 52 in Gugulethu.
Established in 2012 Chapterz’s aim as a band is to tell stories through music and to share and make good memories. Their music traces elements of jazz, Afro soul, gospel, hip hop and R&B.
In the early stages of the band, Chapterz were featured on radio and TV and in 2013 they performed at the annual Cape Town Youth Jazz Festival.
Chapterz take their influences from many musicians such
as the late legend Bra Winston Ngozi Mankunku, Tete Mbambisa,
and Herbie Tsoaeli, who are all
from the same township as band members.
Other musical influencers include Mam’ Sylvia Mdunyelwa, Cecile McLorin, Bheki Mseleku, John Coltrain, Mam’ Sibongile Khumalo, Phil Collins, Nduduzo Makhathini and Zim Ngqawana.
Band members are Prince Mafu (bass guitar), Pam Lunguza (vocals), Skhumbuzo Mhlawuli (drums) and Nkosinathi Matomela (piano).
Tickets are available at the door, and priced from R60 to R100.
