Philippi maskandi musician Nkosibonile Dlamini became an instant star after going viral on social platforms and has since graced the stages at numerous events.
Performing under the name Mphathi Wohlelo MC, 30, recently dropped his latest album, Abantu Baxakekile, and entertained crowds at the Khayelitsha Maskandi Festival hosted by Zibonele FM where he arrived on a horse with revellers shouting his name.
The singer is originally from Umzimkulu kwaMaduna in KwaZulu-Natal and has four albums under his belt, Kancane Kancane, Izidakamizwa, Ngizamela Abantabami and Abantu Baxakekile.
Speaking to Vukani, Dlamini said he was happy to have a huge fan base in the Western Cape where the maskandi genre isn’t as popular.
“My music is pretty electric. For those that do not know me, I’m a singer who is passionate about maskandi. This is the music that we do back in KZN and love. I appreciate being in Cape Town and singing this genre which I see growing even here.”
He says staying true to his fans has brought him this far and he has made sure he was not a one hit wonder.
He has inspired others through his music with songs like Khehle lam and Isalukazi.
Having collaborated with another great maskandi musician iTwasa Lekhansela, the pressure to stay at the top is real because the music industry is constantly evolving.
“It is not easy to stay on top but I measure my relevance by impacting lives and staying true to my artistic vision. I am grateful to my fans and will always be,” he told Vukani.
Mphathi Wohlelo MC’s music is on most music streaming platforms such as Spotify, Apple music, YouTube and Distrokid.
