For gospel singer Sthembiso Soboyiso, nothing’s more fulfilling than being among your own people.
He is living proof that having celebrity status does not mean one should leave for a spacious suburban lifestyle.
The hard-working musician has stayed put in Site C even after releasing four albums and producing work for a few well-known artists.
Pastor Soboyosi has another offering with 12 songs and says the new album will hit the shelves soon. He has already titled it UThixo Wophakama with songs like Nalo ithemba, Ndifuna wena and the title track, UThixo Wophakama.
He said he will be delivering music that people can relate to and understand.
His music has in the past made a point of soothing lost souls. But Pastor Soboyosi wants to add a bit of jazz to this album.
When Vukani joined him for a listening session of a few of his songs, it was evident that the man of God has really matured.
His traditional gospel music was tasteful with a bit of added jazz.
“I am growing with the times. But I want people to know that Gospel music can be in any form. I have noticed how people love jazz,” he said.
Pastor Soboyosi agrees that his journey had been nothing short of meteoric until some tough times arrived and he was suddenly humbled by the tough music industry.
A lack of finances had temporarily set him back until recently when he met a good Samaritan who sponsored him with the new album and a website.
Pastor Soboyisi said he was also bankrupted by artists he produced work for and who then refused to pay him.
He said he was also blackmailed by some people who he helped.
But he said he had to find his way back into the congested business of Gospel music.
“We cannot be crying over spilt milk. We have to look up to God for inspiration and pick ourselves up. It has not been an easy journey but we live for that. I have helped a lot of people in this industry and some have stabbed me in the back. But I am grateful to my current sponsor.
“I must say he was brought by God. We met on a plane coming to Cape town but as they say, the rest is history.
He is doing everything for me. That is why I am able to record once again.”
Pastor Soboyosi worked with Shadrack Ndlovu and Sandi Makhekhe on the album.
Gospel lovers should get ready for a new hit.
