Onke Cwenga Jalamba, known as OJ, has made his mark on the gospel music industry since he released his first album Akalilibal’idinga in 2017.
And since then the 29-year-old, who lives and teaches at a high school in Khayelitsha, has been performing regularly around – and outside the province.
OJ, a former presenter at Zibonele FM and Elgin FM, said his radio presenting helped build his brand and made it easier for him to market his music and accelerate his CD sales.
“It was God’s timing,” he said.
“I would dream about songs and I would wake up with a new song every day.
“I thought of giving songs to artists but I eventually conceded to my calling. God wanted me to minister through music,” said OJ, who used to be a worship leader in his church.
Speaking of his insatiable desire for his work, he said:
“I leave no stones unturned; my lifestyle is very balanced. I give 100% to both my music ministry and teaching.”
OJ acknowledges the late Reverend Deon Nkomfa Mkabile as his other source of inspiration and mentor in music.
He also singled out fellow musician Jongi Magaba as having been pivotal in the early stages of his music.
“Jongi has groomed me as a new artist, he also became my backer and producer,” said OJ.
He is currently reco rding a new album and it will be released before the end of the year.
OJ’s CD costs R50 and you can buy it from him by calling him on 084 352 2270.
