McCoy returns home

Jazz artist McCoy Mrubata will be returning to Cape Town this weekend.

Langa born and internationally renowned jazz musician McCoy Mrubata is set to make a grand return to his home town with live performances in Gugulethu, Khayelitsha and Langa, as part of his Homecoming performances.

The legendary saxophonist will have shows at kwa Sec, at NY 138 No 52, tomorrow Friday July 1, at 7pm, and two additional shows at Moholo Livehouse, in Harare, on Saturday July 2, at 3pm and at Guga S’thebe, in Langa, on Sunday July 3, at 3pm. All the shows are R60 per ticket. The shows form part of the Jazz in the Native Yards series and are organised in partership with Concerts SA.

In all the gigs he will be joined by old time friends Peter Ndlala on bass, Frank Paco on drums and Blake Hellaby on keyboards.

McCoy Mrubata’s Homecoming performances are part of the Concerts SA Venue Circuit which aims to foster a love and support for live music in our communities, as well as anchor small and medium sized venues in urban and rural Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Western Cape.

Jazz in the Native Yards uses different venues in the Western Cape to promote music appreciation in the jazz genre.

The McCoy Mrubata Homecoming is one of many concerts it has produced with support from the Concerts SA Venue Circuit programme. Fresh from a USA tour with superband Uhadi in March and April, performing with South Africa’s most sought after musicians Paul Hanmer, Herbie Tsoaeli, Feya Faku and Justin Badenhorst, McCoy says it is more than fitting to come home to perform after such a long time.

“I can’t wait to perform in my home town for my old friends, new friends, families and fans. My repertoire will comprise of old favourite songs like Cape Samba, Icamagu Livumile and new songs from the current CDs,” he said.

McCoy recently launched his DVD, McCoy Mrubata Live at the Market Theatre.

In May he was part of a South African Dutch exchange band that performed at the Amersfoort Jazz Jazz Festival Netherlands.

He has also released a CD that was recorded last year in Switzerland, called McCoy Mrubata Live at the Bird’s Eye Jazz Club.
