Jazz in the Native Yards presents a double bill of jazz featuring two guitarists Lucas Senyatso and Schalk Joubert at kwa Sec NY 138 No 52 in Gugulethu.
On Saturday October 28, Senyatso performs from 5pm with Cape Town based musicians including Lumanyano Mzi on drums, double bass player Sean Sanby, Blake Hellaby on piano and saxophonist Zeke le Grange.
And on Sunday October 29, Schalk Joubert performs in the courtyard from 4pm with drummer Kevin Gibson, Heather Burgess on flute and alto saxophone, Pierre-Henri Wicomb on piano and Ronan Skillen on tabla and percussion.
Born in Mafikeng in the North West province, in 1998 Senyatso toured America with the legendary Hugh Masekela’s band.
He also performed in Germany, Denmark, Finland, France, UK (London, Leeds), Jamaica, Japan, sharing stages with the likes of Stevie Wonder, Take Six, Maze, Herbie Hancock and many other great musicians.
He has worked with many local musicians including Themba Mkhize, Glosria Bosman, Khaya Mahlangu, Caiphus Semenya, Letta Mbulu, Zama Jobe, Merriam Makeba, Johnny Clegg and Victor Ntoni.
He has also recorded and toured with Keiko Matsui( Japan).
A multi award-winning composer, musical director and producer, Joubert’s debut album Kayamandi was nominated for two South African Music Awards and it featured many iconic South African artists like Feya Faku, Marcus Wyatt, Gloria Bosman and Zolani Mahola.
His music combines jazz, African rhythms and other World Music styles to form and electrifying fusion.
He has performed in the USA, UK, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Borneo and Malaysia with his own group and with a wide variety of national and international musicians.
Tickets cost R70 at the door for each gig. Pensioners and students pay R50.
