DJ Mailomusic releases EP

DJ Mailomusic

After winning an SABC DJ competition in 2018, Siyamthanda Thomas, known as DJ Mailomusic, worked on the musical projects of other artists and didn’t pay too much attention to his own work.

But some time last year, he chose to shift his focus and slowly started to invest in his own brand and music.

The talented up-and-coming DJ released his first EP titled #San’bonani, which contains eight songs, on Thursday April 9.

In an interview with Vukani at his home studio in Site B at L section on Monday April 6, he said it took him six months to put together the EP and he worked with local artists.

DJ Mailomusic says he wanted to release something he was proud of and did not have any doubts about.

He did not want to release an album just for the sake of it and said it is important to feel strongly about your work before you put it out there.

He says after he won the competition he was occupied with other people’s projects and didn’t have time to focus on his own music.

On the other hand, he feels working on those projects gave him a chance to understand his strengths, weaknesses and most importantly, his distinctive sound.

For almost the entire year he battled to come up with fresh ideas which suited his musical style, he says.

He plans to release a full album before the end of the year and wants to use this EP as teaser to see how the public will respond to his music.

When asked about what motivates him to write a song, the 26-year-old says he poured his emotions and life experience into each and every song.

He believes that it is important to write about what you relate to as that makes it more authentic and other people can identify.

“The title says it all and I’m going to make my own mark in the industry.

“When you listen to any of my songs it should either leave you smiling, laughing or motivated. I don’t make music for the sake of having songs out but my music should touch others.

“Music is therapy for the soul and mind. In this EP, I have poured my heart out . I urge the public to support local and upcoming artists so that they do not give up on their careers.”

Mailomusic says Khayelitsha must be known for its talent instead of being seen as den for crime.

He says he wants to own a recording label but first he wants to cement his name and brand in the industry.
