After years of failed attempts and disappointments Khayelitsha comedy promoter, Phumlani Vokovi, may have the last laugh as he realises his dream of bringing his “inaugural black comedy” show to the Artscape Theatre next month.

“After I organised three successful shows at the Look Out Hill I ventured out to a bigger venue, enlisting the services of a well-liked musical group, The Soil. Few people attended and I was traumatised,” he said.

But now, he says he has learnt his lesson. “I went back to the drawing board to re-strategise and now I am hopeful I will deliver a great show,” he said.

The upcoming show features 10 comedians – Kagiso KG Mokgadi, Khanyiso Senqa, Pius Xulu, Asanda Xayiya, Anele Shube, Ntshebe Seasoning-Mira, Ntsika Siqhazolo, Mawonga Gayiya, Masibonge Mndende and Khanya Bonase.

Vokovi recently held a mini version of Black Comedy Official at Kefu’s Pub and Grill in Khayelitsha on August 1 and was spurred to take the show to a new venue.

“The crowd was cracked by the jokes and I think taking it to Artscape will prove a better decision,” he said.

Tickets for the show, which takes place at Artscape on Saturday November 9, are R130 each and available at Computicket. There is an age restriction of 16, and the show is performed in Xhosa, Zulu, Swati and Sesotho. For more information, call 078 958 8169.
